Nathan plunked down in the chair next to Cliff’s desk. Cliff looked up from his laptop. “I dunno, Nate. Your boy isn’t looking all that innocent. He admitted he wasn’t getting along with his girlfriend, and there were times he wanted to strangle her.”

“But Jenna Banister wasn’t strangled,” Nathan supplied.

Cliff stilled. “Jenna Banister? Who’s that?’

“That’s Kristen Young’s real name, Jenna Banister.”

“And you know this how?”

Nathan sat quietly for a few moments, trying to decide how he could tell Cliff the truth about this case without blowing his mother’s cover. He wasn’t sure there was a way to do that. He had to come clean, and he had to trust Cliff Slater. He dragged his gaze to meet Cliff’s. “Let’s find a private place to talk. A place where no ears are listening.”

“Sounds serious. C’mon,” Cliff said. He picked up the case file, then led Nathan down the corridor that led to the observation room. Slipping the file under his arm, Cliff held the door open for Nathan, then locked the door behind them. Both peered into the interrogation room to make sure it wasn’t being used. The room was empty and the lights were turned off.

Cliff leaned against the wall. His steely gaze clung to Nathan. “What are you trying to tell me, and how do you know?”
